Is Life Really All About Attitude?

Approximately 15 years ago I incurred an accident roller skating at one of those rinks where you could skate to the sound of music played by a DJ or a jukebox.

I heard of a new rink opening up, geared up myself with the latest trendy skates, grabbed my 11-year-old kid, and managed to talk a friend/co-worker and her two boys into joining us for a Friday evening of fun.

Not even a half hour passed since I started skating, when suddenly a group of kids holding hands in a "V" formation came from behind, bumped me out of the way slamming me to the ground. I fell on my buttocks.

I remember feeling an excruciating pain I could only compare to my 15 hours in natural labor when giving birth to my son, multiplied by 400.

I was taken to the emergency room by paramedics, where after enduring several x-rays and MRI's was told by an orthopedic surgeon and a neurologist that I would be confined to a wheel chair for the rest of my life!

I remember thinking, how attractive death appeared compared to living in such a helpless way. The thought of my son was the only thing that chased the morbid thoughts away at that time.

Come morning I am finally assigned a room. I am greeted by two nurses upon my arrival. They announced themselves as my morning shift nurses, and introduced themselves: Shirley and Laverne. By then, I had received several shots of morphine. I was literally convinced my death wishes had indeed come true and I died, and gone to some freaky kind of heaven, where I was greeted by two angels called none other than Laverne and Shirley! They were real and wonderful!

After spending two years in a wheel chair I was given an option. The doctors told me about a surgical procedure that would provide me with a 50/50 chance of walking again. I went for it!

After the surgery, the moment of truth! They were all there, orthopedic, neurologist, Laverne, Shirley and my son waiting for me to take the first steps! I remember the doubtful looks on their faces and the one phrase racing through my mind: "I'll show you all"

I took the first steps! I felt my toes, my feet, my legs were withstanding the weight of my body, I was walking, and it was GRAND!

My son, with tears of joy rolling down his cheeks said these words: "Mom, I knew you were going to walk!"

I asked him what he meant? And he responded, "Because your body had no choice but to follow your spirit"
